Zapata Computing partners with the University of Hull to leverage quantum computing in the search for life in deep space

The partnership, the first of several expected commitments, will assess Zapata’s Orquestra® as the platform of choice for the development of future quantum astrophysics applications

BOSTON, October 6, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Zapata Computing, Inc., a leading publisher of enterprise quantum software, today announced a partnership agreement with the British company University of Hull. The partnership will support research aimed at evaluating Orchestra, Zapata’s quantum workflow platform, to enhance a quantum application designed to detect the signatures of life in deep space.

The evaluation will last eight weeks before the team publishes an analysis of the research. This is expected to be the first of several collaborations between Zapata and the University of Hull for quantum astrophysics applications.

In 2016, MIT researchers suggested a list of more than 14,000 molecules that could indicate signs of life in the atmosphere of exoplanets. However, little is currently known about how these molecules vibrate and spin in response to infrared radiation generated by nearby stars. The EA Milne Center for Astrophysics at the University of Hull aims to generate a database of detectable biological signatures using new computer models of molecular rotations and vibrations, including models that exploit quantum computing.

Quantum computers allow extremely precise calculations of the key variable defining atom-atom interactions – electronic correlation – and thus could improve the ability of scientists to detect the building blocks of life in space. This is especially important because even simple molecules, such as oxygen or nitrogen, have complex interactions that require very precise calculations.
